Situated in the southern Sierra Nevada of California, Kings Canyon National Park is well-known for its rocky peaks, deep valleys, and towering trees. The General Grant Grove, with its huge sequoias, notably the General Grant Tree, and the wilderness of the Kings River Canyon are the two different sections that make up the park, which was created in 1940.

THINGS TO DO AND SEE

*Go hiking.  Explore trails such as General Grant Tree Trail which is a simple and quick loop walk in Grant Grove that leads to the world’s second-largest tree, the General Grant Tree.  Take a walk at the 1.5-mile Zumwalt Meadow Trail which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding granite cliffs, river, and meadow.  Check out the easy two-mile Big Stump Trail which winds through a region where gigantic sequoia logging remnants can be found.  If you love waterfalls, go hike to the biggest waterfalls in the park by hiking the 8 miles round-trip Mist Falls Trail.

*Go for scenic drive. The 50-mile Kings Canyon Scenic Byway provides breathtaking views of the canyon and the Kings River as well as access to a number of trailheads and interesting locations.  You might want to venture a drive and stroll to Panoramic Point which is a lookout with sweeping views of the high Sierra.

 

*Go for water activities.  A popular water activity is fishing along the Kings River and its tributaries, mostly for trout.  You might also interested in swimming at natural swimming spots along the rivers, but make sure to check the conditions first because currents and water levels might be harmful.

*Go Camping.  You might be interested in spending the night in one of the park’s campgrounds in Grant Grove Village or Cedar Grove Village where you could really appreciate King’s Canyon magnificence at night plus making it easy to explore the big sequoias and access to a lot of trails.

*Other things to do: Join ranger programs; Go backpacking;  Wildlife sightseeing; Go for a picnic;  Go for snowshoeing and/or cross-country skiing during the winter months.
