  • Fewer crowds:Less traffic thus higher chance of peaceful hikes compared to April-October peak season.  Plus, you can still drive your own vehicle in the first part of March, but the Zion Canyon Shuttle doesn’t operate until the middle of the month.
  • Wildflowers bloom (in lower elevation), and flowing waterfalls (snowmelt from higher elevation).
  • Great time to spot wildlife: Wildlife such as, mule deer, California condors, foxes & bighorn sheep, are more active in cooler weather.

NOTE: Private cars allowed until mid-March, after that you have to take the shuttles);  Zion-Mount Carmel Highway (A stunning drive with switchbacks & Zion tunnel views); Kolob Canyons (Less crowded area with dramatic red rock formations); Kolob Terrace Road  (Leads to Lava Point Overlook, one of the highest viewpoints in Zion).
  • Photography: Popular photography spots include Canyon Overlook Trail for sunrise photography; Kolob Canyons Viewpoint for sunset photography;  visit Court of the Patriarchs, The Watchman, & Towers of the Virgin for awesome daytime view photography; and go stargazing for night photography.
